The Chestnut Hill Methodist Church Cemetery was established at the first burial, which occurred November 1, 1906, for the infant son of William & Emma Sturgill. The cemetery was in continuous operation by Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church until the Church was ordered to close by the Appalachian United Methodist Conference Superintendent Carl Arrington (January 17, 2019). A charge conference formally approved establishing the Chestnut Hill Cemetery Association to assume the responsibility of overseeing the cemetery on May 19, 2019. Articles of incorporation were prepared by the lawyer, Jonathan Jordan, and submitted the following week. The congregation regained ownership of the property and cemetery on May 16, 2021. The Church was re-established as Chestnut Hill Community Church.
The first Board of Directors consisted of Larry Ward, Chair and former CHUMC Council and Trustee Chair, Janet Ward, former CHUMC Cemetery Chair, Arlita Perry, Tammy Caldwell, Dennis O’Keefe, and Royce Moran.
