Chestnut Hill Community Church was founded on January 7, 1887, with its first pastor being J.T. Stover. The church began with a group of dedicated charter members, including Eliza Bedwell, R.F. Edwards, Mrs. Lucy Gambill, Mrs. Zilda Gambill, Mrs. Adeline Gaultney, Mrs. Samuel Jones, Mrs. Margaret McMillan, Rufus K. Pierce, Mrs. Eliza A. Pierce, John M. Pierce, Lydia Pierce, and Eliza Pugh. Initially, services were held in the home of George and Rose McMillan. The land for the church was generously donated by James "Doc" McMillan, while Rufus K. Pierce contributed the funds necessary to build it. The church structure itself was constructed by the hardworking men of the Chestnut Hill Community.
